There is an art to making a well made documentary. The pace, music, lighting, and dialog must paint a picture to the viewer that matches the story being told. Perhaps no other documentary I've seen paints such a beautiful picture, or tells such a wonderful story, as Charlotte.
The film follows the workings of the Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway over a period of a few years. The principals of the business are Ross Gannon and Nat Benjamin whom started the boatyard in 1980 on the shore of Martha's Vineyard. However, this is not an ordinary boatyard, this establishment only builds, restores, and designs wooden boats. The film chronicles the three year period of the building of Nat's own boat, Charlotte. Charlotte is only possible after building up a lifetime's worth of resources, skill, and wisdom. A culmination and reward for the years of hard work, dedication, and love for his craft.
After viewing this movie I was jealous. To be able to create such elegant beauty with your own hands would be a wonderful feeling. The closest I've come to this is writing articles and helping give input into the design of a magazine I worked for. Few are blessed with the circumstances or skill to be able to create beauty in their vocations.
Through this documentary you quickly and beautifully come to realize that there is an art to what the boat builders create. The film's score is simple and moving, the camera shots are spectacular, and the story wonderfully sails along to its conclusion. I highly recommend this movie.
This movie will be on Hulu for the next 11 days. Please watch it.
